So, it's been a while since I've written anything and since I spent a few hours this weekend figuring things out with the Red EPIC and AVID Media Composer I thought I'd share the workflow I used for dailies and for editorial.

Equipment
- 17" Mac Book Pro 2009 Mid 2009 - and it'll be a shame to see the 17" go!
- WD 2TB Raid 0 FW800 + eSata drive
- GRaid 1TB FW800 + eSata drive
- AVID MC 5.5
- Red Cine X
- Transfered all Red Raw files to two separate drives. The quicker the interface the better! I had two FW800 drives connected via daisy chain. Ideally would have used eSata and keep the drives on separate buses but....can only use what you got! ;)
- Used Red Cine X to manage rushes. Exported the 4K HD from Red Cine X using the (1/2 Good debayer settings for 4K) into DNxHD36 MXF files for AVID
- If during the shoot you need to have QTs for people to view vs transcoded rushes for editorial then I'd recommend using an even lower debayer setting (1/4 or 1/8) to really speed things along.
- Tested end to end by exporting EDL from AVID (must be File 16 format), importing the EDL into RedCine X apply a simple grade and re-export to DNxHD185 MXF files for AVID. Relink sequence in AVID to new media.
- Assuming all went well with transcoding to DNxHD36 MXF's, you now need to move these to the Avid media folders, I like to create a new numbered folder so I know it's all in there.
- The Red Cine X export should also have exported AAFs and an ALE. Drag the AAFs into an Avid bin and this should then automatically link up with the media you've just brought in. You'll notice that the meta data is missing and the clips are in lowercase. Select all the clips and go to import. select the ALE file which was also generated by Red Cine X and in the options for log select the last radio button to merge with current media. Your lower case master clips will now go to upper case and all meta data should be there.
- Sync with BWF (Broadcast Wav Files) in your normal syncing way...either via timecode or in points.
- Edit!
- Copy your finished sequence into a new bin.
- Select it and right click and Decompose.
- Go to your EDL manager and export an EDL for the sequence using File 16 EDL format. Be sure to deselect audio tracks or it won't work!!
- Importing the EDL into RedCine X and select to import into a sequence.
- A sequence should then appear which links to the native R3D files. (Assuming you selected the location of the media in the dialog box that appears)
- Apply a grade, to the film, assuming you are grading in Red Cine X. If someone else is grading then let them advise you on this.
- Re-export to DNxHD185 MXF files for AVID as separate clips.
- Move the media to Avid media drives like you did for editorial.
- Relink the decomposed clips in the your AVID bin to the new media. (You can select a specific resolution on the import to make things easier.)
- Re-link the original sequence to your new clips by selecting the new clips and original sequence and selecting re-link.
- Export for delivery.
